The truth is that nobody cares.

There are few deaths that fall away.

Except for deaths within our tribe, most of us do not prove anything except indifference to the death of a stranger.
Teenagers stabbed to drug money, retirees frozen to death at home, victims of hunger, war, disease: so many of us pretend to care for, because the cure is as expected by others, even if secretly we wonder why all the fuss.
Some cases strike us in a deeper way. The death of a photogenic baby, sometimes the death of someone famous. But the fact is that probably most of us feel more sorrow for the death of a dog or a soap opera character rather than that of our friends or neighbors.
